Checking for odometer tampering on a used Korean car

Odometer tampering isn't widespread in Korea's regulated market, but it does happen — and it's one of the hardest scams for a remote buyer to catch without the right tools. Here are 4 practical ways to check before you wire anything.

1) Compare the Encar reading with periodic inspection history

Cars in Korea undergo mandatory periodic inspection (검사), during which the odometer reading is officially recorded every one to two years depending on the car's age. If the current Encar reading is lower than the last recorded inspection reading, that's a clear red flag.

2) Request a full VIN history report

A VIN report shows ownership history, registration dates, and sometimes officially logged past odometer readings. A break in the chronological sequence of readings (a higher reading followed by a lower one) is near-conclusive evidence of tampering.

3) Match the odometer to the car's actual condition in photos and report

A car with a 30,000 km reading but visibly worn seats or pedals deserves a direct question. The Encar inspection report documents interior and exterior condition — always cross-check it against the stated odometer figure.

4) Ask for an official record, not just a screenshot

Screenshots are easy to edit. Ask for a direct link to the car's page on Encar or the VIN itself for independent verification, rather than relying only on an image sent to you over WhatsApp.

We review the Encar report and periodic inspection history for every car before sending the final purchase offer, and flag any reading inconsistency we notice before you commit to payment.

Browse our inspected listings, or send us the VIN of any car you're considering and we'll help verify it before any commitment.
